Assessing a diamond's price
To estimate a diamond's price accurately, look at its 4Cs (4 criteria).

Colour
Graded from D (colourless) to Z (lightly tinted): the more colourless a diamond, the rarer and more expensive it is.
- 2
Clarity
Clarity refers to the presence or absence of inclusions in the stone.
- 3
Cut
Cut refers to the quality of the cut (proportions, symmetry, polish), which determines the diamond's brilliance.
- 4
Carat weight
The price rises with the weight and quality of the stone.
Diamond value per carat
The average price of a diamond can range from €1,181 to €2,108 per carat.
Diamonds are weighed in carats. One carat equals 0.20 gram (1/5 of a gram) and is divided into 100 points.
Carat weight is the most objective of the 4Cs. It is measured with scales accurate to a hundredth of a carat: major gemmological laboratories such as GIA, HRD or IGI use highly precise, calibrated digital scales.
- A diamond's price is always calculated according to its carat weight.
- Large diamonds are rarer than small ones, so they cost more.
- A diamond's value increases with its carat weight.
